“Poor Little Rich Boy” Tom Smithburg tries to buy his first Republican Party office in Chicago

Independent Republican Presidential candidate and conservative blogger Andy Martin moved into Chicago’s 42^nd Ward forty years ago. The Forty-Second had been home to the notorious crime syndicate hoodlum “Botchie Connors” and contained the heart of Chicago’s honky tonk district. Today the 42^nd Ward hosts the “Viagra Triangle.” From his base in the 42nd Ward Andy has consistently fought local and state corruption. The latest insect on the political horizon is “Tommy Smithburg,” who is trying to buy the Republican Party’s 42^nd ward Committeeman’s position with the deep pockets of his dad Bill Smithburg. And, in typical Chicago/Illinois political corruption style, craven politicians are lining up with their hands out for more Smithburg cash, all while supporting little Tommy. Charges of money-laundering are flying. Voter fraud is alleged. Welcome to Chicago, America’s “Capital of Corruption.”

(CHICAGO) (March 16, 2012) Independent Republican Presidential Candidate and conservative blogger Andy Martin opens the back doors of seamy Chicago politics to a national political audience with his latest column on the “campaign” of “Little Tommy Smithburg.”

Forty years ago I moved into Chicago’s 42^nd Ward (you can check the deed for 1200 N. Lake Shore Drive). I have seen famous nite spots such as Mr. Kelly’s change hands and change names. (The Original Pancake House has somehow survived all of those years.) Politicians have headed to the graveyard or federal prison, not always in the same order. I have lived at several addresses in the ward.

The 42^nd Ward Democratic Committeeman and Cook County Board President, George Dunne, and I became polite friends. Dunne was always trying to recruit me to become a “machine” politician. Politely I declined. Dunne once accused Dick Kay, WMAQ-TV’s political reporter, of being my “campaign manager.” Kay is now a flack on Chicago radio. I saw George Dunne at the Greek Islands restaurant and sent him a bottle of wine shortly before he died. In his bed.

The Crime Syndicate once tried to end my political career prematurely, if you know what I mean. But that’s a story for another day.

I have been a colorful part of a colorful ward but I have always maintained my corruption-fighting independence and integrity. That's not an easy thing to do in Illinois politics. Not for 47 years.

The latest circus in the 42^nd Ward revolves around a wealthy retired Quaker Oats executive, Bill Smithburg, and his son “Little Tommy” Smithburg. Little Tommy’s sole claim to fame at the age of 24 is that while serving as the president of a Northwestern University fraternity he arranged for the “Half Pint Brawlers,” a performing dwarfs show, to appear at his fraternity during “rush” (recruitment) season. You can read the links and decide how much weight to give to Tommy’s bad judgment four years ago. Tommy claims the dwarf incident was a “learning experience.” (Isn’t that the phrase Obama is always using?)

Little Tommy’s daddy has given nearly a third of a million dollars to Illinois Republican candidates and “committees.” When the checks mount up into the hundreds of thousands, Illinois politicians take notice and start paying rapt attention. Then they get their hands out and start asking for more. So it is no surprise that a long line of Republican luminaries, palms out, are “endorsing” Little Tommy for Ward Committeeman.

There are even charges of “money-laundering” involving Little Tommy’s dad and senile Republican Daddy Warbucks Jack Roeser. (The details of all of these allegations can be found in the long list of links below which accompany and document this reporting.)

Today I got my first robo-call for Little Tommy. Hapless and incompetent former gubernatorial candidate Bill Brady of Bloomington, Illinois phoned me to endorse Little Tommy. Bloomington is a long way from Chicago but Bill Brady knows a 45 cent stamp can still carry a campaign contribution check between the two cities. There are governors and other luminaries who have “endorsed” Little Tommy. Daddy apparently isn’t embarrassed. Money can buy you anything in Chicago, and it has certainly purchased a long line of endorsers for Little Tommy.

What makes Little Tommy a complete joke is that he exemplifies everything that is crass and corrupt and just plain wrong about politics, both in Illinois and nationally. Tommy is also an embarrassment to his “generation.” Little Tommy “interned” at Goldman Sachs, the notoriously corrupt Wall Street investment Bank that helped bring down our economy and destroyed millions of working family jobs. I am sure Little Tommy didn’t “share the pain” or “feel the pain” of his malignant and malevolent co-workers at Goldman Sachs. When you steal from working people you can’t have a conscience. The work is just too dirty.

Earlier this week, a senior Goldman executive resigned—by publishing a resignation letter in the New York Times calling the firm utterly corrupt and mendacious (link below-“Why I am Leaving Goldman Sachs”). So Mr. Smithburg doesn’t really have the kind of job “experience” that would commend him to his neighbors.

Tommy says he is now working at a “healthcare-focused lower middle market private equity firm in Chicago.” Oh, yah. Tommy is trying to figure out ways to profit from the medical misery of others. That’s what they teach you when you intern at Goldman Sachs.

But perhaps I’m being unfair to Little Tommy. Maybe he really is an earnest young man that wants to “serve” 42^nd Ward Republicans. As they say in the midnight TV infomercials, “but wait, there’s more.”

Little Tommy’s robo-callers tell me Tommy has “new ideas” and that he wants to “grow the Republican Party.” Grrreat. There’s just one problem. All of the people Tommy’s daddy has been giving money to in the Republican Party are the same people that have devastated the party and created the current “Combine” of Republican and Democratic corruption. Tommy’s lead “endorser” is Corrupt-Republican-in-Chief State Chairman Pat Brady. Brady serves as the affable and innocuous front man for all of the Republican Party’s current sleaze.

So the obvious question is, how is Little Tommy going to make “changes” that would disenfranchise all of daddy’s political contacts who endorsed Little Tommy in the first place? It appears that Little Tommy’s words are just hollow claims that bear no connection to the tawdry reality of who is bankrolling and endorsing his candidacy.

Sadly, Little Tommy is no more than a front man for his father’s political cronies. Little Tommy is a fraud, a phony and a pitiful excuse for what passes for reform in the Illinois Republican Party. The political crooks are now so arrogant they run their own “reformers” to undermine legitimately independent candidacies.

Little Tommy’s web page says “It's time for a new day.” Maybe it’s “time for a new way.” Bill and Tommy Smithburg should take their millions elsewhere, and stop trying to pretend they are political reformers when they are only stooges for the worst elements in Republican Party politics.

On the other hand, Little Tommy would be a fine successor to crime syndicate hoodlums such as the late 42^nd Ward Committeeman “Botchie” Connors, who ran one of the most successful gangster organizations in Chicago history. Come to think of it, Little Tommy lives only a stone's throw from a park memorializing the Crime Syndicate hoodlum who controlled the ward. Yes, it's Botchie's park. Maybe Little Tommy takes his inspiration from sitting in Botchie Connors’ Park. They would get along just fine together. Botchie would collect his “vig” and put Bill Smithburg’s “kid” up for something.

Hey, it’s the Chicago way. If you don’t believe me just ask Barack Obama and David Axelrod. They know all about “The Chicago Way.” And now so do you.

Andy Martin says Dan Proft is the de facto representative of organized crime in the Illinois Republican Party

Dan Proft is trying to elect Jeanne M. Ives as a state representative in suburban DuPage County, as Chicago hoods try to tear down and gain control over the last bastion of the Republican Party in Illinois

Andy says honorable Republicans should defeat Ives and run Dan Proft out of the party

(CHICAGO) (March 5, 2012) I went to the Illinois legislature as an intern in the 1965 General Assembly, forty-seven years ago. Legislators and courts had failed to reapportion the state so the state house ran “at large” in 1964, with each party fielding “bed sheet ballots” with 177 candidates (the legislature has since been downsized, a great loss to the state as a whole given the paltry savings which the downsizing generated).

In Springfield the Chicago Crime Syndicate or “Mafia,” locally known in Illinois as “The Outfit,” had its own state senators as well as a gaggle of General Assembly members. The Republican Party also had the “West Side Block,” which was a group of members who were elected as nominal Republicans in Chicago but who actually voted as crime syndicate stooges and de facto Democrats in Springfield.

Although the legislature was a cesspool of corruption, there were also shining lights in the war against gangster politics. Then-State Senator Paul Simon, who went on to national prominence, had been condemned by his own senators for writing an article detailing the extent of corruption in the Illinois legislature. Adlai Stevenson III was in his first term and acted as a front-man for reformers. Abner Mikva went on to a distinguished career in congress and the judiciary after being marked for extinction by organized crime elements in the Chicago Democratic Party. Leland Rayson, Bob Mann and Dan Pierce were reliable votes for reform.

My personal favorite was Representative Anthony Scariano. Scariano labored under the handicap of being an Italian-American and thus “presumably” under the thumb of “Italian” leaders, all of whom had to make their peace with The Outfit. Scariano never did. Tony Scariano was one of the most honest men to ever serve in Illinois politics, and he paid a high price for his integrity.

The Outfit was so powerful that when Scariano was up for appointment as a federal judge, hoodlums were able to block his nomination out of fear he would crusade again corruption from the federal bench. It was a sad day in Illinois politics when the Scariano nomination was shelved. (He later was elected to a state judgeship.)

Even the most honorable of men could be compromised. Fortunately for me, despite invitations to do so I have never sold out or buckled under to the crooks in either the Democratic or Republican parties.

While we call it the “Chicago” crime syndicate, most of the leading gangsters actually lived in the Cook County suburbs, or “townships,” which are outside Chicago proper but still part of the Cook County “machine.” As early as the Al Capone era in the 1920’s, the Town of Cicero had been Capone’s headquarters. Ninety years later, Cicero is still the headquarters of organized crime in Illinois.

And—no surprise—there are still gangsters and hoodlums in both parties. The hoodlum Pesek Brothers have made a fortune milking Cicero. One of these gangster brothers actually serves on a local school board. The Peseks are nominal Republicans and thus welcome in the party of Republican State Chairman Pat Brady.

Pat Brady worked briefly as a federal prosecutor but then crossed over to the corruption side of Illinois politics, where the real money is made. In reality Brady is now nothing more than a dupe for organized criminal activity (as he collects a fat paycheck from a nationally prominent “consulting” firm).

Sadly, the Illinois Republican Party is probably the most corrupt of the nation’s state parties. Another dubious “first” for Illinois. Barack Obama, anyone?

United States Senator Mark Kirk used to brag that he was Mayor Richard M. Daley’s favorite Republican; Kirk carried water for Daley in the U. S. House. No, Kirk is not a hoodlum or thug or speak with “dems” and “dose.” Kirk is merely a mousey fellow traveler who “got along” with organized crime because organized crime had the power to destroy him by exposing his closeted gay life.

Today the slick face of organized crime in the Republican Party is Chicago media huckster Dan Proft. Proft has made a fortune milking Cicero (see links below as a starting point; there are many more) for “public relations” services.

Proft is held in high esteem by the same “Republican Party leaders” who played ball for decades with Richard J. Daley and then his son Richard M. Daley. Proft is being lavishly funded by many of these same respectable “Republican” Chicago-based businessmen, some of whom may have no idea they are funneling cash into the Crime Syndicate. Or maybe they don’t want to know where their cash is really going. That’s the “Chicago Way.” Just ask Barack.

Proft is trying to elect Jeanne M. Ives as a state representative in Wheaton, Illinois (see link below). Ives in turn has been a Proft groupie for years. It’s hard to believe that someone as bright as Ives, a West Point graduate, doesn’t know she is being used, and will be used in Springfield if she is elected, to undermine Republican Party reformers who are trying to rid the state of crime syndicate politicians.

Ives says she is a “conservative” and no doubt she is feeding DuPage County ladies the usual right-wing catnip: “Pro-Life, lower taxes, less government, etc.” But Illinois has higher taxes and more government than almost any other state. Abortions? Don’t ask. So how’s that right-wing Republican catnip "working for ya" in Illinois?

A handful of political operators in both parties (called “The Combine” by some media observers) continue to enrich themselves while the People of Illinois are increasingly impoverished and the state is bankrupt.

Can Jeanne M. Ives be stopped? We will find out on March 20th. If Ives wins the primary, Illinois and Illinois Republicans will be the losers.

In closing, let offer this ironclad disclaimer. I have never spoken with any of Ives’ opponents, and am not supporting any one of them. I just know Dan Proft; after forty-six years I know organized crime in Illinois, and I know Jeanne M. Ives is a de facto dupe for The Outfit as it seeks to extend its tentacles into DuPage County.

Here’s hoping DuPage voters do the right thing and overwhelmingly reject Ives for state representative.

COMING NEXT IN ILLINOIS: The “Midgetman” is the latest stooge for corrupt politics in Illinois. And he’s being supported by—no surprise—Pat Brady and his stable of reliable stooges and closeted gay men in an intra-party battle to stave off political reform.

P.S. If I may insert a political “commercial” for my own campaign, I am the only Republican presidential candidate with a history of fighting corruption in politics and government. America today is corrupt to the core. Our congress is corrupt and our business establishment is corrupt, which is why we had an economic collapse over the past several years. We have a crime syndicate “front” in the White House.

I am ready to reform our great nation. Are Americans ready to rebel? I have forty-seven years of experience ferreting out and fighting crooked politics. Republicans can still “broker” me into the nomination at the Tampa Convention. Could I do a worse job as a presidential candidate than the liberal media’s remaining “Four Musketeers?” Four sure losers. Ultimately, when corruption flourishes, America and Americans are the losers. The proof is all around us.

(CHICAGO)(April 30, 2011) Corruption-fighting Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin holds a Chicago news conference today, Saturday, April 30th at 1:00 P.M. to demand that the Illinois Republican Party (“IRP”) “stop playing footsie” with organized crime figures who have infiltrated the IRP.

Martin says “the Brothers Pesek” continue to exercise influence over IRP affairs at the county level. Martin also charges that Cook County Republican Chairman Lee Roupas is a “disgrace to the Greek-American community” because Roupas tolerates Mafia penetration of the Cook County party. “Why is Lee Roupas allowing ‘crime syndicate committeemen’ to remain in the Cook County party?” Martin demands. “Craig Pesek resigned from the state committee but is still serving on the Cook County committee. Why?

“The obvious conclusion: Roupas is acting in part as a ‘front’ for organized crime figures.

“State IRP Chairman Pat Brady recently said that ‘appearances matter.’ I agree. Why is Skip Saviano a state committeeman? Saviano comes out of the roots of the old ‘West Side Block’ that packed up and moved to the suburbs. Saviano may not be a Mafia member directly but he is directly linked to organized crime figures in Chicago. What an ‘appearance.’

“People reading this must wonder ‘Is Andy watching too many late night Robert De Niro movies?’ No, I’m not. (see links below) Chicago really is a ‘mob’ city. The Mafia (called ‘The Outfit’ in Illinois) is a very real and very pernicious presence in both political parties. Republicans are just as culpable as Democrats, which is why the state is controlled by a bipartisan ‘combine’ run by both parties to perpetuate corruption.

“How could Craig Pesek’s brother Jeff be ‘reelected’ this week to the presidency of a local school board? Jeff Pesek testified under immunity in an organized crime trial (link below). There is a climate of fear which extends from the historic ‘Crime Syndicate Capital’ of Cicero to other suburban communities. This is how organized crime extends its tentacles into politics and ‘honest graft’ involving public agencies.

“Lee Roupas and Pat Brady should be prosecuted as accessories to ‘Outfit’ corruption if they keep turning a blind eye to these outrages” Martin says. “I may be running for president, but I have been fighting Crime Syndicate hoodlums for decades.
