(New York October 20, 2015 ) Republican presidential
candidate and foreign policy author/expert Andy Martin will hold a New York-area
news conference today, Tuesday, October 20th to continue his analysis of the
“debate” which Donald Trump and Jeb Bush have joined over whether Jeb’s brother
“kept us safe” while George W Bush was president. In 1999-2000 Andy broadcast a
TV commercial in New Hampshire over
WMUR-TV; the ad predicted George Bush would start a war with Iraq
if he was elected president. In 2003, Andy arrived in Baghdad
the week after Saddam was deposed; Andy lived in Iraq
during long periods of 2003. Although Andy strenuously opposed the invasion of Iraq ,
and predicted the Bush policy would lead to disaster, his first-hand
experiences living in Iraq
makes him the only presidential candidate with actual Middle East
experience.
“Please allow me begin with a brief ‘victory lap,’” Andy
will state. “In 1999, I was right about why then-Governor George W Bush was
wrong for the presidency. Last Friday and Saturday I provided an extensive
analysis of the facts behind President G W Bush’s failures as a president
(please see the links below for my original weekend analysis of the Trump/Bush
argument).
“During the 2008 presidential campaign someone called me the
‘Internet Powerhouse;’ the term stuck because I energized the opposition to
Barack Obama after John McCain’s campaign collapsed. My readers are some of the
most loyal followers on the Internet. They know that when I speak as a
politician or candidate, I label those comments as ‘political.’ And when I
speak as an expert or analyst, I try to be as impartial and authoritative as
possible.
“My analysis often does a better job of explaining Donald
Trump’s thoughts than he does, because he lacks my foreign policy depth. Nevertheless,
because I am unalterably opposed to the candidacy of Jeb Bush I am indebted to
Trump for leading the charge to defeat Bush.
“Here are the facts:
“First, I knew Trump’s 9/11 claims would open up a raw wound
for Jeb because Jeb as a candidate is basically an empty vessel. Jeb has
recruited (not sure of the exact number as of today) some seventeen of his
twenty foreign policy ‘advisers’ from his brother’s failed administration. Jeb
is running to reinstate the ‘G W Bush III Presidency’(second
George W Bush administration).
“Second, pre-9/11 President Bush was given repeated warnings
of the terrorist threat, but there was no response from his administration. President
George Bush ‘did not keep us safe’ before 9/11, because the nation was asleep
to the terror threat and Bush himself was wallowing in complacency.
“Third, in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 President Bush did
act appropriately and he is entitled to credit. For the first few weeks after
the attack he led a unified nation.
“Fourth, Bush soon squandered his brief period of national
unity when he began to use 9/11 as an excuse to plan an attack on Iraq ,
when Iraq had
nothing to do with 9/11. If Bush had directed all of our resources into Afghanistan ,
we would have caught Osama Bin Laden, promptly, before Bin Laden could burrow
into hiding.
“Fifth, over the long term Bush most definitely did not
‘keep us safe.’ Bush left behind a time bomb in Iraq ,
and because of President Obama’s hubris and incompetence nothing was done to
defuse the bomb. But make no mistake, Bush’s own disastrous policies, and his
surrender to Al Maliki for example, set the stage for the catastrophes that
followed.
“Sixth, Bush did not ‘win the war’ because of the ‘surge.’
The surge was a desperate stopgap measure to stave off complete collapse and
chaos. As a tourniquet to stanch the bleeding, the surge succeeded. But there
was no follow-up. In fact, Bush, once again lulled into complacency by his own
egomania, decided he had ‘won’ (‘mission accomplished?’) and used the temporary
relief offered by the surge to walk away from the inevitable disaster.
“Seventh, Jeb wants to cut-and-paste dates out of context to
claim his brother was a success. But now, in 2015, we can see the true chaos
that eight years of George Bush in the White House left behind. Obama thought
he could waltz into office, withdraw from the Middle East
and implement his domestic socialist agenda. He was wrong. The cancers which
Bush left behind have consumed both Obama’s legacy and the Middle
East itself. That is why I believe history will judge Obama our
worst president, and Bush our second-worst president. For sixteen years we have
been led by two-party incompetents.
“Donald Trump, who obviously has a radically higher media
profile than I do, has done America a great service by finally opening up a discussion
and debate on the incompetence of George W Bush, and how Bush’s failure as a
leader not only led to Obama, but also left behind a world that would become
increasingly endangered and unstable. George Bush left behind a Middle
East on the cusp of collapse, and Obama enabled the collapse. Over
the long term, G W Bush most definitely did NOT keep us safe.’ Jeb cannot disguise
or disregard his brother’s failed presidency. Today, out of sight and out of
mind, Bush may be viewed more favorably. But as we revisit 2001-2009, the
Bush-era disasters will once again come into focus. Since leaving the White
House George W Bush has had the decency to fade from public view and for that
he can be respected. But his eight-year record of arrogance and incompetence
will live in infamy forever.”
