(NEW YORK)(January 14, 2011) Barack Obama originally promised to deliver a 10-15 minute speech in Tucson. Instead he bellowed on for a Clintonesque 35 minutes. He should have stuck to his original plan.
As almost everyone remarked after the Tucson event, and as I predicted hours before the Obamaganza, Obama created a circus-like atmosphere for his junket to Tucson. Air Force One was larded with Democrats.
The conduct of the Arizonans was beyond embarrassing. The event looked like a basketball pep rally to me. When you are supposed to be grieving it is not an excuse for boorishness to say you want to “release” your inner emotions. That’s a childlike response, not an adult reaction to a national tragedy.
I predicted in advance that the “Native American,” who turned out to be a Mexican, had no rational role in the ceremony and he proved my point with inane comments about his upbringing having nothing to do with the moment.
Thursday, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said the White House was “surprised” by the unfortunate atmosphere in Tucson Wednesday night. Liberals and conservatives alike were stunned by the circus-like atmosphere.
How could they be “surprised” when I wrote a column hours before the event predicting exactly what happened and predicting a circus-like atmosphere was being orchestrated by Obama & Co? Obama and his staff were surprised by their own organization and machinations? Hogwash. The fact that Gibbs was pleading post-speech “surprise” Thursday leads me to believe they are aware I was right and they were wrong. The speech was drowned out by the raucous atmosphere in the amphitheater.
Next time Gibbs should read my remarks before he takes off on a junket. Then he won’t be surprised. My readers knew what was about to happen; the White House claims it didn’t. Back to you, Mr. Gibbs.
I could have extracted a sincere speech of 10-15 minutes from Obama’s remarks, but after fifteen minutes he was in full Barry Obama campaign blather mode with the same cadences and catchphrases he used to bamboozle the American people in 2008.
So am I against “civility?” Not by a country mile. I believe we can all be more civil. I disagree with Democrats on policy and governance but Democrats are often more entertaining and amusing than “chosen frozen” Republicans. I won’t cross the line on policy with “D’s” but I am always prepared to cross the line for a good meal and a few jokes with the Democrats.
In the White House I would be more like Ronald Reagan than George W. Bush. Dems would be just as welcome as Republicans to stop by for a burger and a beer.
But, seriously, since Obama threw down the gauntlet of civility on Wednesday night I would like to return the challenge to him and offer the president an opportunity to back up his “civility rhetoric” with “civility action.”
The 2010 election was a referendum on Obamacare, bailouts and the imminent repeal of don’t ask, don’t tell. Obama lost.
So “what’s the action?” What’s my offer to Barack Hussein Obama, in his role as pro tem President of the United States? Very simple.
Since the American people rejected Obamacare and devastated the Democratic Party’s candidates in 2010, Obama should agree to an immediate repeal of Obamacare, the complete 2,000+ page statute. Then the Republican House and Democratic Senate could start from scratch with a clean piece of paper and work with civility and bipartisan harmony to hammer out a law that would command the respect of 100% of the American people instead of rejection by 70%.
Will Obama accept my challenge? Never. Obama’s “civility” is skin deep, just as his “bipartisan” rhetoric in 2009 was nothing but gossamer for the iron fist of his socialist agenda.
Obama wants “bipartisanship” and “civility” on his terms. It’s all Obama, all the time. He wanted the Republicans to capitulate in 2009, and they didn’t. And as Obama sought to deconstruct the America we love, and to replace it with his warped vision of an America that he was given by his socialist mentors, the president steadily lost the American people. And then he lost the election. Obama is the Democrats’ answer to Herbert Hoover.
Ironically, Obama should accept my offer for his own selfish reasons. (That’s how political compromise works; there has to be something in it for everyone.) If he agreed to a repeal of Obamacare both parties, but especially Democrats, would breathe a sigh of relief and sit down as adults to hammer out a jointly-supported medical care reform plan.
As a Republican I don’t agree with everything the Republicans have proposed for medical reform; some of it is impractical. But Republicans have good ideas and they want to use the existing system as a base on which to build a better model. When we are tinkering with 17% of the economy that’s the right approach. I call my approach “conservative.” I want to conserve the good in the existing system and reform the bad. “You got a problem with that?”
Likewise, not everything the Democrats advocate is ridiculous. Lost in the 2000+ pages of Obamacare there was a lot that Republicans can support.
So, how about it Barry? Will you accept my offer, and will you agree to a repeal of Obamacare so that the entire nation can join in a bipartisan rewriting of our national health plan?
The ball is in your court.
And, if you are inclined to scoff at my offer, think of what happens if you reject my proposal. The house is going to repeal Obamacare, for sure. The senate just might as well, though you plan to veto any repeal. But by promising in advance to veto any repeal of Obamacare you have given endangered Democrats running in 2012 a “safe harbor” to vote for repeal. If the senate and house both pass repeal, you will be standing alone against the American people. Not a good place to be on the eve of a reelection campaign.
If Republicans in the House say “yes” and Democrats in the Senate say “no,” we are going to have a donnybrook through this congress as everyone battles for their own field position on Obamacare. Since we already know that the American people have overwhelmingly rejected your plan, next time it will not be endangered Democratic legislators whose careers are on the line. It will be your own. Are you willing to put your presidential legacy on the chopping block simply to defend a statute the American people have rejected? We’ll see.
In the meantime pick up the phone and say “hello.” I will always try to be civil in any conversations we conduct. A president who put a Smith graduate in charge of protocol must have some redeeming qualities. I’ll keep looking.
Repeal Obamacare or the American people will repeal you. I hope that’s civil enough. But you get the message.
