In Part One of Two parts, Republican Presidential Candidate and columnist Andy Martin says that the mainstream media have once again sought to fool the American people into thinking Obama is a “leader.” On reflection and review, Martin places “Obama’s Flying Circus” to Tucson in perspective, and says it is not a pretty picture. This is the first of a two-part post-partum analysis of Obama’s failures as a leader (and possible genius as a master political manipulator) in Tucson. What happens the next time we need to hold a national memorial? Will it be held in a college field house?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin says the mainstream media (including Fox News) continue to mislead the American people
Martin says Obama’s campaign spectacle in Tucson was planned from the gitgo as a campaign rally, not a memorial to the dead and recovering
Martin predicted that Obama would seek to drive attention to Obama and away from the victims—and Andy did it hours in advanced of Obama’s speech; why did the White House “not know” what was being planned in Tucson?
(NEW YORK)(January 15, 2011) It was just a week ago that our national tragedy in Tucson unfolded and the liberal mainstream media began their attacks on conservatives and Republicans.
Several days have now passed since Obama’s spectacle “memorial service” in Tucson. I may be alone in my viewpoint, but after reading these remarks I hope you are convinced that the mainstream media have once again helped Barack Obama [Bahm]boozle the American people into thinking he 1s a leader. 2012 reelection campaign, anyone? Read on.
First, in a nation driven by a commitment to “freedom” and “rights,” it is inevitable that we are occasionally going to have the tranquility of our republic disturbed by madmen (and women). Whether mental illness consumes one percent (3 million people) of the population, or more, or less, we can’t be sure. But there is no way a free society can escape occasional disruptions by deranged individuals.
I am not discussing “political violence” here, because we have seen very little politically-motivated violence in all of the random attacks directed at our institutions by Americans themselves. Rather, on proper review and reflection, we usually find that the individuals who perpetrate insane acts are, no surprise, insane.
We also find on review and reflection that our leaders use national tragedies to manipulate our emotions and to advance their own political and personal agendas. No surprise there. Rahm Emmanuel, Obama’s former chief-of-staff, said that every crisis should be exploited for political benefit.
Rather than criticizing our institutions which are there to deal with insane individuals, I would like to praise them for doing a pretty good job of protecting us from the ravages of mentally ill individuals such as the Tucson murderer.
Second, the White House has a whole staff of people whose sole purpose is to anticipate events and plan events, including reactions to tragedies. While any individual disaster may be unanticipated, it is no “surprise” to presidential staffers that presidents will at some point in their presidencies have to deal with a national trauma. The White House knows what to do in such situations. They are not rookies or neophytes at crisis management or grief therapy.
Third, as a nation we have usually conducted “memorial services” in places of great solemnity. I am very proud that the “National Cathedral” in Washington (an Episcopal church) is almost always the place where great national losses are mourned and remembered. (I am a member of the Episcopal Church.) Why did Obama plan to hold his “memorial” in a college field house?
Fourth, if you hold a “service” in an athletic field house, with tens of thousands of students in attendance, that may not lend an air of solemnity to the occasion.
So, what happened when Obama decided to “memorialize” the Tucson victims? What happened was precisely what Obama wanted to happen. His staff crafted a political event and not a memorial service. They tried to mislabel the raucous air of the production as “just blowing off steam” by the local community. Blowing smoke in our eyes is more like it.
Around midday on Wednesday, after initial web-based reports on plans for Obama’s flight to Tucson, I began to see the “memorial” as nothing more than an Obama self-love extravaganza. I followed developments on the web. The more the story developed on the Washington Post, the more political the event appeared to become. What I saw increasingly said to me “politics” and a political event.
If I could see that a political event was developing, and if I could write hours before the event took place that Obama was about to engage in a preening act of self-referential Obama-love, how is it possible the White House Staff and Press Secretary Robert Gibbs were “surprised” by the outcome? “There are none so blind as those that will not see, none so deaf as those that will not hear.”
Obviously, the sincerity of Gibbs, Obama & Company in claiming they were “surprised” by the tone of the Tucson event has about the same level of “sincerity” as “Round up the usual suspects” has in the film Casablanca. After the fact, Obama, through Gibbs, professed “surprise” that what I saw developing as a political Obamaganza turned out to be precisely what it appeared to be: an Obama self-love session.
Where was the Tucson “memorial” conducted? In a church? In a place of solemnity? When was the last time a Kennedy Family memorial was held in a college field house instead of a church? Obama's “memorial” was scripted for performance in an athletic field house. Why wasn't a Tucson church or synagogue chosen to “memorialize” the victims and to pray for recovery of the survivors? When did "rabbi" Janet Napolitano become our national clergywoman? Eric Holder our priest-in-chief?
Not one local clergyman was present at the Tucson “memorial.” Not one Rabbi, not one Priest, not one. Instead we had the pathetic spectacle of a University of Arizona academic clown performing a Mexican memorial in which he took more time to deliver his personal resume than to remember the dead or survivors. This character is a “Doctor” and Professor? What kind of a "university" is Arizona when jokers such as a Mexican memorialist are on the senior faculty?
But if I predicted we were in for a clown service hours before the event, how could the White House have been surprised when I was not? Obviously, they knew exactly what they were planning and it was not a memorial service.
Next, not one person tried to restrain the crowd. The university president, who acted as Obama’s toastmaster with profuse praise for our great leader, never once asked the crowd to calm down and manifest a respectful tone. How could “the children” behave themselves and manifest due respect and solemnity if the adults present did not ask them to do so? No, not one person who spoke tried to tone down the tenor of the crowd.
Now let’s look at the “speech.”
Obama’s prepared text (link below) said he was coming to “kneel to pray…” Did you see any kneeling or any praying? Was there any kneeling during any part of the service? Any prayer? The only “religion” on display was Obama-love.
Did anyone from Tucson show anyone from Washington the program of events in advance? What happened to the “kneeling” and “praying” Obama came to perform? It disappeared. Has anyone on the White House staff been fired for blowing the advance planning? Not that I am aware of.
Paul Krugman, who has been one of the most vicious left-wing attack dogs on conservative leaders, chose these words from Obama’s speech to highlight Krugman’s column Friday (link below):
“[L]et us use this occasion to expand our moral imaginations, to listen to each other more carefully, to sharpen our instincts for empathy, and remind ourselves of all the ways our hopes and dreams are bound together.”
“Expand our moral imaginations?” “Sharpen our instincts for empathy?”
These passages are classic Obama campaignspeak.
Early in his over-long speech Obama focused on the victims. But as the half hour of peachiness wore on, Obama reverted to campaign mode. His gestures and cadences were those of a candidate, not a mourner.
Some bloggers have even suggested that the delay in Obama’s appearance was timed to coincide with the special order of trinkets and memorabilia to “memorialize” his visit and that the “Together We Thrive” theme from a campaign blogger (link below) merely morphed into the “thriving” slogan of last Wednesday. It’s hard to know where the truth ends and where Obama media manipulation begins.
So we had an event that from the outset and the outside looked like a campaign rally, held in an athletic field house, which was to “memorialize” victims without the benefit of any clergy, and which ended with Obama exhorting Americans to “expand our moral imaginations.”
Hope and change, anyone?
Compared to Obama’s manipulations and meretriciousness, Sarah Palin looks like a paragon of virtue.
So, where were the national media and pundits? Acting as trained dancing bears for Obama. As usual. That’s something to mourn.
Now you understand why my columns are called “Contrarian Commentary,” and why I am running for president in the 2012 primaries. To tell the truth to the American people, and to pull the wool off their eyes. 100% Obama flannel. Before it’s too late. And Obama “memorializes” America out of existence.
Kneeling and praying anyone? Just call Obama. He knows all about that.

Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin defends Sarah Palin, questions Hernandez’ homosexuality
Conservative candidate and columnist Andy Martin says everything he wrote on Wednesday concerning the media’s relentless efforts to demonize and destroy Sarah Palin is continuing on Thursday and Friday. Martin says excuses such as the claim that the Wednesday “scene” in Tucson was an “Irish wake” are disrespectful and demeaning to Irish-Americans. Irish know the difference between a wake and a public spectacle.
Martin also observes how the media are trying to control the message and editing the facts to serve their own agenda by concealing Daniel Hernandez’ sexuality from public view.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin says the media are continuing to abuse Sarah Palin
Martin rises to defend Palin from the malicious attacks of the liberal media elite and Barack Obama’s Democratic Party hit men such as Senator Dick Durbin
Martin says that the media have tried to “control the message” of the moment by eliminating any reference to Daniel Hernandez’ homosexual activism
(NEW YORK)(January 14, 2011) On Wednesday I wrote how the media were out to demonize and destroy Sarah Palin. I also offered her some pointers on how Palin could improve her television presence in the future. On Thursday, however, the attacks on Palin continued (see link below). I’m sure the attacks have not ended. The media are unabashedly trying to demonize Palin. They are out to destroy her.
On Wednesday I speculated that media attacks might be endangering Palin’s safety. I was not surprised to learn on Thursday that I was correct. As a result of media malignancy Palin has been inundated with threats.
What has Sarah Palin done to deserve these attacks? Nothing. Nothing at all.
The media’s latest ploy is to compare Palin’s remarks to Obama’s (see link below).
Obama’s team crafted a political pep rally in Tucson and he delivered a rousing campaign speech. He tried to suggest we had to mold America to fit the vision of a nine year-old child. While the death of a child is tragic beyond belief, and the loss too horrible to contemplate, it is doubtful that a child has a world vision that we must live up to. Instead, Obama was back to his old campaign malarkey, this time cynically using the death of a child to advance his agenda before an extremely liberal and disrespectful crowd. The man is shameless.
Not once did Obama admonish the crowd to be serious or reflect due reverence. Instead, he ramped up and ratcheted up his own campaign rhetoric in response to the crowd’s boisterous behavior. On Thursday, stung by the nation’s shock at the misbehavior of Tucsonians, Obama tried to walk back responsibility for the rally and tried to stick the University of Arizona with blame for the outbursts. As always, Obama claimed he was totally innocent of any accountability for the event which he created to showcase his compassion for the victims. Yah, sure.
Some of Obama’s media sycophants have condescendingly tried to compare the noisy and rambunctious Tucson crowd to an “Irish wake.” There’s an old expression, which is not limited to the Irish, that people cry at weddings and laugh at funerals. But any joviality at a funeral is conducted in private, among family and friends, and not before a crowd of 15,000 persons yelling and screaming on national television.
There was no jocularity at any Kennedy family memorials I can remember. It is demeaning to Irish-Americans to compare Obama’s Tucson mob to an Irish memorial.
Palin, by comparison, merely defended herself in her Wednesday video. And she was attacked for that defense. Palin is not the president. She is not the national “uniter” or “decider.” She is still a private citizen.
To the extent that Palin owes anyone anything in the public arena, she might want to provide some solace for her supporters in response to the malicious attacks being leveled at her by the Democratic Party’s resident hit men.
Not only is the media broadcasting a totally false and relentlessly negative image of Sarah Palin, they are apparently editing the facts to serve the “hero of the moment” story.
Daniel Hernandez is an authentic American hero. I have no problem with that fact. He was great. He is a young man with amazing presence. I salute him for his efforts to save the life of Representative Giffords.
Mr. Hernandez is also a gay rights activist and he was probably working in Representative Giffords’ office because of their common support for gay rights. But instead of holding up Hernandez as a gay hero, all mention of his sexuality has been deleted from the reports of his heroism.
Only the homosexual media have commented on Hernandez’ status (see links below). Is it a secret? Should Hernandez’ gay activism be hidden from the public? Hernandez is one of the most prominent gay heroes in recent memory and yet the media are concealing his private life despite the fact that, by comparison, they usually trumpet the sexuality of people involved in fighting discrimination in the military. Why the secrecy? Why the silence?
Hello Rachel Maddow? Why so quiet? Here is a national gay hero and you are totally silent. Hypocrisy my dear? Good gracious.
I’m not gay so I can’t speak to what it is like to be a closeted gay such as U. S. Senator Mark Kirk. And I have expressed concern about closeted gays because of the conflicts they create in the political process and especially in the Republican Party. We’ll have a column on Kirk when the news quiets down.
But Hernandez is not closeted. He is honest, open and aboveboard about his private life. Due respect for that candor would suggest that the media should have credited him for what he was, a superman who in a moment of abject terror rose to the challenge. Hernandez would be welcome in my White House.
Bottom line:
I think Sarah Palin continues to be victimized and, contrary to what others have said, I believe she had every right to defend herself. Bravo Sarah!
As for Mr. Hernandez, he is a genuine hero. But given his openness and honesty, why has everyone been so hush-hush about the reason Hernandez was working in Giffords’ office? Are we sanitizing Giffords' pro-gay political views and Hernandez’ own role in her office? I don’t know. But the media aren’t talking. Didn’t Hernandez personal life rate a brief mention, a few words, somewhere in all of the verbiage? Apparently not. Why did only the “gay” media report on Hernandez’ activism?
And they wonder why the American people, liberal and conservative, distrust the media. When it suits their interests, the media trumpet a person’s homosexual status. When it suits their interests, they drop any mention of sexuality from their narrative. It’s all media manipulation.
On the other hand, maybe the media know us better than we know ourselves. Maybe we are a nation of hypocrites when it comes to sexuality. I’m not sure. I invite readers to respond with their reactions and comments. The Hernandez “silence” is a question where we can have a lively debate and discussion. As family.
And as for Sarah Palin, the behavior of the media and Obama’s Democratic Party hit men has been and continues to be despicable. The media have done her wrong. Why? To paraphrase the great expression from the McCarthy era, “At long last, have Obama and the media no shame?” Are they willing to endanger the lives of Sarah Palin and her family to advance their socialist political agenda? Apparently so. And the American people elected this narcissist to “lead” us? For shame.

Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin challenges President Obama to repeal Obamacare
Conservative candidate and columnist Andy Martin says that Barack Obama should, as his first act of bipartisan “civility,” agree to repeal Obamacare now, and allow the congress to develop a joint Democratic/Republican health care reform plan. Martin is waiting by his telephone for Obama’s call.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin offers Barack Obama an opportunity to back up his “civility” rhetoric in Tucson with civility action in Washington
Martin says that Obama should immediately ask both Democrats and Republicans to repeal Obamacare in full
Martin says a 2011 bipartisan health care reform act should start with a clean sheet of paper
Martin says that if Obama rejects repeal of Obamacare he is effectively making himself a one-term president
(NEW YORK)(January 14, 2011) Barack Obama originally promised to deliver a 10-15 minute speech in Tucson. Instead he bellowed on for a Clintonesque 35 minutes. He should have stuck to his original plan.
As almost everyone remarked after the Tucson event, and as I predicted hours before the Obamaganza, Obama created a circus-like atmosphere for his junket to Tucson. Air Force One was larded with Democrats.
The conduct of the Arizonans was beyond embarrassing. The event looked like a basketball pep rally to me. When you are supposed to be grieving it is not an excuse for boorishness to say you want to “release” your inner emotions. That’s a childlike response, not an adult reaction to a national tragedy.
I predicted in advance that the “Native American,” who turned out to be a Mexican, had no rational role in the ceremony and he proved my point with inane comments about his upbringing having nothing to do with the moment.
Thursday, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said the White House was “surprised” by the unfortunate atmosphere in Tucson Wednesday night. Liberals and conservatives alike were stunned by the circus-like atmosphere.
How could they be “surprised” when I wrote a column hours before the event predicting exactly what happened and predicting a circus-like atmosphere was being orchestrated by Obama & Co? Obama and his staff were surprised by their own organization and machinations? Hogwash. The fact that Gibbs was pleading post-speech “surprise” Thursday leads me to believe they are aware I was right and they were wrong. The speech was drowned out by the raucous atmosphere in the amphitheater.
Next time Gibbs should read my remarks before he takes off on a junket. Then he won’t be surprised. My readers knew what was about to happen; the White House claims it didn’t. Back to you, Mr. Gibbs.
I could have extracted a sincere speech of 10-15 minutes from Obama’s remarks, but after fifteen minutes he was in full Barry Obama campaign blather mode with the same cadences and catchphrases he used to bamboozle the American people in 2008.
So am I against “civility?” Not by a country mile. I believe we can all be more civil. I disagree with Democrats on policy and governance but Democrats are often more entertaining and amusing than “chosen frozen” Republicans. I won’t cross the line on policy with “D’s” but I am always prepared to cross the line for a good meal and a few jokes with the Democrats.
In the White House I would be more like Ronald Reagan than George W. Bush. Dems would be just as welcome as Republicans to stop by for a burger and a beer.
But, seriously, since Obama threw down the gauntlet of civility on Wednesday night I would like to return the challenge to him and offer the president an opportunity to back up his “civility rhetoric” with “civility action.”
The 2010 election was a referendum on Obamacare, bailouts and the imminent repeal of don’t ask, don’t tell. Obama lost.
So “what’s the action?” What’s my offer to Barack Hussein Obama, in his role as pro tem President of the United States? Very simple.
Since the American people rejected Obamacare and devastated the Democratic Party’s candidates in 2010, Obama should agree to an immediate repeal of Obamacare, the complete 2,000+ page statute. Then the Republican House and Democratic Senate could start from scratch with a clean piece of paper and work with civility and bipartisan harmony to hammer out a law that would command the respect of 100% of the American people instead of rejection by 70%.
Will Obama accept my challenge? Never. Obama’s “civility” is skin deep, just as his “bipartisan” rhetoric in 2009 was nothing but gossamer for the iron fist of his socialist agenda.
Obama wants “bipartisanship” and “civility” on his terms. It’s all Obama, all the time. He wanted the Republicans to capitulate in 2009, and they didn’t. And as Obama sought to deconstruct the America we love, and to replace it with his warped vision of an America that he was given by his socialist mentors, the president steadily lost the American people. And then he lost the election. Obama is the Democrats’ answer to Herbert Hoover.
Ironically, Obama should accept my offer for his own selfish reasons. (That’s how political compromise works; there has to be something in it for everyone.) If he agreed to a repeal of Obamacare both parties, but especially Democrats, would breathe a sigh of relief and sit down as adults to hammer out a jointly-supported medical care reform plan.
As a Republican I don’t agree with everything the Republicans have proposed for medical reform; some of it is impractical. But Republicans have good ideas and they want to use the existing system as a base on which to build a better model. When we are tinkering with 17% of the economy that’s the right approach. I call my approach “conservative.” I want to conserve the good in the existing system and reform the bad. “You got a problem with that?”
Likewise, not everything the Democrats advocate is ridiculous. Lost in the 2000+ pages of Obamacare there was a lot that Republicans can support.
So, how about it Barry? Will you accept my offer, and will you agree to a repeal of Obamacare so that the entire nation can join in a bipartisan rewriting of our national health plan?
The ball is in your court.
And, if you are inclined to scoff at my offer, think of what happens if you reject my proposal. The house is going to repeal Obamacare, for sure. The senate just might as well, though you plan to veto any repeal. But by promising in advance to veto any repeal of Obamacare you have given endangered Democrats running in 2012 a “safe harbor” to vote for repeal. If the senate and house both pass repeal, you will be standing alone against the American people. Not a good place to be on the eve of a reelection campaign.
If Republicans in the House say “yes” and Democrats in the Senate say “no,” we are going to have a donnybrook through this congress as everyone battles for their own field position on Obamacare. Since we already know that the American people have overwhelmingly rejected your plan, next time it will not be endangered Democratic legislators whose careers are on the line. It will be your own. Are you willing to put your presidential legacy on the chopping block simply to defend a statute the American people have rejected? We’ll see.
In the meantime pick up the phone and say “hello.” I will always try to be civil in any conversations we conduct. A president who put a Smith graduate in charge of protocol must have some redeeming qualities. I’ll keep looking.
Repeal Obamacare or the American people will repeal you. I hope that’s civil enough. But you get the message.
See’ya.

Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin is concerned by Obama’s memorial service in Tucson
Conservative candidate and columnist Andy Martin says that Barack Obama may be exploiting his ceremony in Tucson by inviting a stream of politicians to attend and by allowing the solemnity of the occasion to be diluted

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin asks whether President Barack Obama’s “production” in Tucson is genuinely sincere on just another example of political correctness
Martin says the stable of politicians and judges Obama is carting to Arizona raises questions about Obama’s real motives
“Genuine grieving should be genuine grieving,” says Martin
(NEW YORK)(January 12, 2011) Well, Barack Obama is going to Arizona to express his “sincere” concern for the tragedy in Tucson. Personally, I do not believe Obama is capable of any form of sincerity except his own self-love. I am concerned that the aftermath of Obama’s production in Tucson may be to
undermine the solemnity of the tragedy.
At noon today, the Washington Post reported that Obama’s “ceremony” in Tucson would be called “Together We Thrive.” In my opinion, the use of the term “thrive” is as poorly chosen as Sarah Palin’s use of the term “blood libel.”
Americans are not coming together to “thrive.” They are coming together to grieve. They grieve for the victims, and they grieve for the unspeakable assault on our democracy. “Thriving” is not a word I usually associate with solemn occasions.
If Obama wanted to speak as our national leader, I would suggest it could be done just as effectively and much more safely from the Oval Office. That is where I think President Ronald Reagan would have chosen to address the nation. Instead, Obama has allowed a carnival-type event to be created in which his presence is diluted by the added presence of many unnecessary distractions.
The Washington Post’s 12:30 version (of the same report, which has since been updated) reported that Obama’s presentation would feature a “Native American blessing,” although “Native Americans” had nothing to do with the events in Tucson. Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Secretary Janet Napolitano would also speak. Huhhh? What relevance do Holder and Napolitano have to a lengthening list of speakers? When combined with the “Native American blessing,” the Obama “event” becomes more and more of an exercise in political correctness than a moment of shared sacrifice and national mourning for the victims.
Obama is cheapening the grief and exploiting the tragedy.
By 5:00 P.M. tonight the Washington Post’s updated story reported that Obama’s passenger list on Air Force One had been expanded to include former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Pelosi???), a justice of the U. S. Supreme Court (“All the better to lobby you, Your Honor”), and an assemblage of politicians. In other words, what had begun as a solemn address to the nation by the chief executive is rapidly deteriorating into nothing more than a jamboree of politicians seeking to slice off a little bit of the tragedy for their own personal use.
What is missing here?
In my opinion, American public officials are losing the ability to be sincere. Genuinely sincere. Maybe that is why political leaders, and Obama in particular, have lost the ability to lead the American people.
Television has homogenized “grief” into a “process” that has to be pursued as a TV production after each national tragedy. It is almost as though we follow a script every time something unspeakably sad and inappropriate happens. The spontaneity is gradually draining from national events of rememberance. The only person missing from Obama’s grief circus is Tucson’s clown Sheriff Dupnik who blamed Republicans and conservatives for the killings in his city.
Obama could have used Tucson as, in his own words, “a teachable moment,” to unite the nation. Instead, his remarks will soon be forgotten and their impact will be minimal.
Obama claims to have been working on his Tucson “speech” since Monday. If I was calling the family members of the victims and soliciting ideas for a eulogy, I would not have been asking them to suggest how we are “thriving in the wake of the tragedy,” or what they thought of an ever-lengthening guest list on Air Force One. Ironically, although Pelosi is joining Obama in Tucson, wounded Representative Giffords voted against Pelosi as speaker last week.
My prediction, Obama’s remarks will fade because of their patent and transparent insincerity. His motives are so transparently political, and his assemblage is so embarrassingly politically correct, that the very people he wants to reach, his adversaries and critics, will be turned off by the patently insincere production in Tucson.
Grief must be expressed in a solemn manner, not by creating a one-hour floor show of politicians and entertainers performing “Native American blessings” and other distractions.
But then Obama has always been a “production” instead of a genuine and authentic “leader.”
Nothing has changed. Obama is still Obama. He always will be.
My prayers go out to the survivors of the victims in that they will have to endure Barack Obama’s latest extravaganza in self-promotion and synthetic and stage-managed grief.
The American people deserve better. We have suffered a loss. We should mourn with dignity and solemnity and not with Nancy Pelosi on board Air Force One.

Republican Presidential candidate Andy Martin analyzes Sarah Palin’s Tucson video
Martin says the national media have “declared war on Sarah Palin.” Martin suggests the media’s attacks may be endangering Palin. Martin says Palin’s Tucson video was poorly produced; she needs better staff work and a more expert team of advisers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin on the liberal media elite’s “War Against Sarah Palin”
Martin says the media’s relentless attacks on Palin may be endangering her
Martin says Palin’s video on the Tucson tragedy was poorly prepared
(NEW YORK)(January 12, 2011) Sarah Palin released “two” videos today, laminated together as one. My remarks are in two parts, first analyzing the "war” against Sarah Plain that is an ongoing trope of the nation’s media elite; second, I address the somewhat disappointing Palin remarks on their own merits.
Unfortunately, all of Palin’s comments were overshadowed by the ill-advised insertion of the term “blood libel” in her remarks.
First, the “War Against Sarah Plain.” Almost from the moment she was chosen as a vice presidential candidate, Governor Sarah Palin has been the target (can we still use the word “target?”) of a vile campaign orchestrated by the nation’s liberal media to demonize and destroy her. Although I was surprised by the choice of Palin, I felt that Senator John McCain had to choose a woman as his running mate. He chose Palin. Mission accomplished (ohhh).
Palin is what we used to call a “self-made” person. She didn’t inherit wealth. She didn’t inherit social position. She didn’t marry wealth. And she didn’t have wealth fall on her by accident through the invention of some electronic gizmo or by penning a bestseller. Instead, Palin literally worked her way up from high school student, to college graduate, to wife and mother, to local and then state politician. No, Palin was not schooled in our elite institutions or inculcated with the values of our “governing” organizations in New York and Washington. She is truly “self-made.” Which is why ordinary Americans identify with her. The fact that Palin is who she is, and that she is not the product of a family legacy or the invention of the entertainment media, makes her someone whom the American people instinctively like.
Unfortunately in 2008 McCain, who ran one of the most haphazard campaigns in history, frittered away Palin’s authenticity, her natural energy, and her own sound political instincts. McCain forfeited the White House because of his own incompetence, not Palin’s. Nevertheless, the national media, who always loved McCain for being the "anti-Republican" Republican, have willingly shifted the blame for his abysmal campaign from McCain to Palin.
McCain could have sat Palin down after he appointed her and schooled her in a couple of minutes. “If you don’t know the answer, say ‘I don’t know.’ Tell the truth to the best of your ability. It is easier to remember the truth than a lie.” End of grooming. Instead McCain and his minions bollixed up Palin and sought to “compensate” for her national inexperience first by hiding her from the media, and then throwing her to the wolves. Can I still say this was the political equivalent of a “blood sport?” Or is that term now also verboten? Can we “throw people to the wolves” or is that too violent for our new national “civility?”
Palin’s political instincts were better than McCain’s. She wanted to tackle (too violent, again?) Obama head on and expose the fraudster for what he truly was. McCain was willing to undermine his own campaign by pulling his punches (a forbidden expression in the “new civility?”) and by allowing Obama to paint McCain as a confused old man, which in truth he was.
No sooner had the shooting stopped in Tucson than leftwing operatives such as MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann were goading Palin to come out and speak. I was perhaps the first presidential candidate and political writer to condemn Olbermann and his cohort for trying to pin the blame for Tucson on Palin, Bill O’Reilly and other conservative personalities. The murders at Tucson were a crime, not a political event.
Since Saturday there has been a rising crescendo of left-wing attacks on Palin for not speaking out. Finally, Wednesday, she spoke (I analyze her remarks in part two below). But no sooner had her video been released than the media increased the volume of their attacks on Mrs. Palin.
Let me ask a question, and please feel free to respond. If, as we know, vile rhetoric and exaggerated attacks can cause a person to be targeted by the mentally deranged, is the media’s War Against Palin endangering her and exposing her to “revenge” attacks by extremists?
I think there is a serious possibility that by relentlessly demonizing Palin the media elite are endangering her and her family. The level of vitriol directed at Palin far exceeds that “targeted” at anyone else in political life except President Obama. Palin is still a private citizen. Madmen usually gravitate to attacks on persons who are being vilified in the media. I am concerned that media attacks on Palin are increasing the possibility she could be threatened.
It is hypocrisy of the worst sort that in decrying the violence of political speech, the media are trying to demonize Palin and possibly energizing mentally unbalanced persons to attack her because of the media’s antipathy for her. The media could be making her the next target of some madman or woman. I think the media need to declare an end to the war against Palin and start realizing their attacks could be triggering a new round of violence.
Now to Palin’s video itself. I have been involved in every aspect of radio and TV over the past forty years. I thought Palin’s remarks were disappointing. Putting aside the “blood libel” remark, Palin was too cheery and too botoxed for a solemn occasion. President Lincoln spoke at Gettysburg for mere minutes. Lincoln’s words endure; Palin’s will not. Lincoln’s remarks were simple and direct. A heartfelt message of mourning was all that Palin should have delivered. Instead, Palin’s advisers got her to deliver a Chamber-of-Commercy speech full of boosterism and self-congratulation for America, when solemnity and only solemnity was called for.
Although Palin has worked on TV, she has seemingly forgotten the lessons she learned there. “Sincere” remarks which do not appear to be heartfelt will not endure. President Ronald Eagan understood the distinction.
Ironically, in his remarks tonight Obama is likely to make the same mistake as Palin. See today’s “second column.”
Palin’s video did not call for and of her facial gestures. Her mannerisms were inappropriate to shared grieving. Palin’s latest team of “advisers” is diluting Plain's genuineness and undermining the integrity of her “brand.” Palin is authentic. Obama is not. But today, Palin sounded like Obama, and like Obama will probably sound tonight (see my second column today for criticism-in-advance of Obama’s Tucson production).
Finally, the use of the term “blood libel” was bizarre. The term has an unfortunate history. The “first use” of the blood libel term passed without major comment in the Wall Street Journal on Monday. So we now know that words which, when uttered by someone else, are noncontroversial can become “libelous” when used by Palin. Is there any better evidence of the media’s “war” against Sarah Palin?
Bottom line: (i) the media are endangering Palin by demonizing her. The media are rapidly making Plain into the Governor George Wallace of the current generation. (ii) In my opinion, Palin’s remarks were poorly written by her speechwriters, instead of being spoken by the heart by Palin herself. If I were advising Sister Sarah (as I call her) I would say, “Sarah, be yourself, and don’t let them put words in your mouth. Speak from your heart.” (iii) The insertion of the term blood libel may have been an accident by an inexperienced speechwriter, seeking to appeal to the religious heritage of the principal victim of the shootings Representative Giffords. Obviously, the words backfired. The speech was not properly tested.
With all of her supporters, and all of her advisers, this speech was obviously not focus-grouped in advance. That’s why and how the libel error slipped in.
Governor Palin, lock and load. The media have declared war on you. In the meantime, you need a new team of advisers. You won’t make it to the White House with writers that slipped the term “blood libel” into your remarks.
