Re: USMC (ret.) Cpl. Megan Leavey

Dear Secretary Panetta,

Secretary Donley and

General Schwartz:

I began my career working for U. S. Senator Paul Douglas, who was a Marine Corps hero. At the Senator’s behest I also spent time with Marine units in Viet-Nam. Therefore I have a special concern for our men and women who are wounded in battle. [My own career in uniform was more limited, having served in the USAF Reserves from which I received an Honorable Discharge.]

I spent part of 2003 living in Baghdad, traversing Iraq and along the way obtaining firsthand information concerning the bravery of our men and women and their canine companions working to detect IAD’s, booby traps and other antipersonnel weapons.

Because of my own affection for dogs, I also created what I lightly called the “Royal Baghdad Canine Constabulary,” a collection of feral dogs that I trained to assist me in my own activity in Iraq. You can see a picture of “Inspectors” Jake and Lucy at my home page of www.andymartin.com/bio.htm. I became deeply attached to them and they became somewhat well known in central Baghdad.

So the story of a Marine that was injured in Iraq, and wants to adopt Rex, to possibly save him from being euthanized, caught my eye on Fox News (“Justice”) and the NY Daily News.

I would respectfully request that you make expeditious arrangements to release Rex to Cpl. Leavey. If I may assist in any way, you can find me on the campaign trail and I will do what I can to accommodate your requirements. I will be in Washington, DC March 30-31.

Please keep me apprised of your efforts.

Respectfully submitted,

ANDY MARTIN
