ATLANTA NEWS CONFERENCE: Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin slams Obama tactics on Libya

Mild-mannered but steel-willed Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin is the only presidential candidate who has actually been to Libya and the Middle East other than on a political junket. Martin says President Obama’s “we’re leaving” announcements endanger both coalition military forces and Libyan civilians.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ATTENTION ATLANTA DAYBOOK/ASSIGNMENT EDITORS

Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin holds an Atlanta news conference today, Monday, March 21st to criticize President Barack Obama’s handling of the Libyan engagement

Martin says Obama’s premature announcement of immediate departure could backfire and actually prolong the mission

Andy says Obama’s “We’re out before we’re in” remarks may strengthen the resistance of Libyan dictator Ghaddaffi’s die-hard supporters

Martin says the fact that Libya has not released four New York Times hostages is a sign of bad faith that Obama is apparently ignoring

(NEW YORK)(March 21, 2011) Corruption-fighting Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin holds an Atlanta news conference today, Monday, March 21st at 1:00 P.M. to accuse President Barack Obama of endangering American forces with Obama’s “in-and-out” pronouncements on the Libya conflict.

Martin is a Middle East expert and the only presidential candidate who has actually been in Libya. He has over forty years of foreign experience including the Middle East.

Martin says that the failure of the Libyan government to release four New York Times journalist hostages is a sign of bad faith by the regime.

Martin is in Atlanta to campaign for the Republican presidential nomination and to launch attacks on one of his opponents, Newton Gingrich. “Ah, the best laid plans,” Martin says. “We scheduled our Atlanta trip to meet Georgia Republicans and announce our ‘campaign’ against the candidacy of Newton Gingrich. And President Obama, the rascal, went ahead and launched a war.

“As the only Middle East expert among the presidential candidates, and the only one who has actually been to Libya, I am deeply concerned by Obama’s self-defeating military ‘tactics.’ In my opinion Obama is endangering both the people he sent to save Libyans and the Libyan people he is trying to save.

“Obama dithered for weeks while thousands died in a Ghaddaffi slaughter. Then the president was dragged kicking and screaming to the United Nations. After the U.N. approved force Obama managed to delay again.

“And, no sooner were our planes in the air, Obama was promising their imminent departure. Precipitously announcing our departure will stiffen the resistance of Ghaddaffi’s forces. Is this Obama’s way of ‘leading’ as ‘commander-in-chief?’

“You don’t ‘protect’ people by telling their adversaries you are already packing up and leaving in a few hours or days. That is no way to prevail. That’s the surest way to prolong the conflict.

“The Arab League, taking note of Obama’s vaciliaion, is also trying to have it both ways: first approving and requesting force, and then protesting the use of force.

“It seems everyone wants to tell the American military what to do and how to do it except Obama himself. While the UN’s mandate was indeed limited and specific, we need to rely on military judgment to get the job done, not the demands of Arab politicians. The Arab League does not determine American military tactics. If they don’t like our approach we can pack up and go home. And by the way, why aren’t Egyptian and Saudi pilots part of the coalition? They fly the same planes we do. Obama’s weak leadership creates confusion and hesitation.

“It does not appear, however, that the Libyans themselves are protesting the coalition’s tactics. Somebody appreciates our efforts.

“Announcing our departure prematurely undermines the mission and leaves Obama looking like an ‘Anti-American’ president who was forced into using force and wants to avoid any use of that force which projects power in a decisive manner.”

Martin has scheduled a “meet-and-greet” with Georgia Republicans for Monday afternoon before the Georgia GOP Presidents’ Day Dinner. Tuesday morning Martin will hold a news conference to announce his plan of attack on “presidential explorer” Newton Gingrich, a former Georgia congressman
