Dear Illinoisan:

In a few hours I will by flying home to Chicago. I had originally planned for a long weekend. Instead, my campaign volunteers are sending me on to Des Moines to open the Iowa campaign over the weekend.

With the release of President Barack Obama’s original 1961 birth certificate the presidential campaign has reached a milestone.

At this time I would like to express my thanks to the People of Illinois for your past support and encouragement and share with you my vision for the “New Ronald Reagan Revolution.”

In commenting on Obama’s surrender to the “Birther” movement the Chicago Tribune referred to me on its editorial page as “Chicago’s own.” (link below) In some sense I do belong to the People of Illinois; and for that “ownership” I am profoundly grateful and humbled.

It is hard to realize I came to prominence in Chicago 43 years ago, jousting with the first Mayor Daley, when Barack Obama was 7 years old. I may have been around a long time but I am still fresh, full of energy and ready to fight for the People of America. I have decades of staying power behind me because I have always tried to do the right thing.

Some of you have followed me since my years as a student leader and law student at the University of Illinois. I wanted to play for the Fighting Illini but my coaches realized I would never be a great athlete. Instead, they said I had potential to develop into a good leader. Together with my college roommate, African-American Art McCaskill, they nurtured the leadership skills that gave me the self-confidence to confront presidents of the United States over and over again.

Forty years ago I moved to Chicago and began fighting the entrenched corruption in the courts and politics of the city. I filed the first “political” civil racketeering suits and helped pave the way for what eventually became “Operation Greylord,” resulting in the conviction of nearly a hundred judges, lawyers and court staff (www.AndyMartin.com).

When I challenged Barack Obama’s missing certificate I pointed out where the original document was secreted: right in the state archives of Hawai’i. Ultimately, with my credibility and Donald Trump’s celebrity, we forced the president to release the document. In the midst of preparations for the royal wedding the London Daily Telegraph took time to present a “timeline” showing me as the man who created the Birther movement (link below). Ironically, I was only trying to search for the truth and find the facts. I still am.

But I am much, much more than a “Birther” candidate.

Today the president of the United States must understand the workings of the world. Every day a president is called on to make life and death decisions about deploying forces, opposing enemies, aiding allies and defending the national security of our nation.

I am the only presidential candidate who has lived and studied abroad, thanks to the University of Illinois, studied languages, and been present at many of the major wars and revolutions since the 1960’s. I have the experience to exercise sound judgment. My potential opponents are all decent human beings. But they lack the depth of worldwide experience and maturity of judgment I bring to the presidential campaign.

Likewise, I was trained as an economist at the University of Illinois. I see the challenges we face; but I also see the great opportunities in front of us if only we have the guts to seize them.

Where do we go from here? Well, we go backwards in time exactly 150 years.

A hundred and fifty years ago Illinois sent a new president to Washington. Abraham Lincoln had one goal: “to save the union.” One hundred and fifty years later, I hope you will entrust me with a presidential nomination so that I can do likewise and “Save the Union.” Lincoln knew that if the union did not endure, the nation would fail.

Today we are a fighting a new civil war. We wound each other with words instead of bullets. Ordinary citizens cry out for clarity, consistency and comity between young and old, rich and poor. But the political parties and special interests fire away. Democrats accuse Republicans of being racists. Republicans accuse Democrats of being socialists. Democrats want to bankrupt the nation with big spending. Republicans refuse to adopt practical solutions to our economic problems and insist no spending is the only way to survive. Each party is confined in an ideological straitjacket of its own making.

Make no mistake I am a conservative Republican. But my goal is to save the union. My heart says we can succeed. My head tells me I have the strength and experience to lead the charge.

Four months after I announced in New Hampshire (December, 2011), I am still the only formally-announced “national” Republican candidate for president. We are running ads from Iowa to New Hampshire to South Carolina (a new batch goes into production on May 9th). Many other candidates are still just “exploring their options.”

How do we achieve my goal of “Saving the Union?” The task will take Chicago-tough leadership, Illinois-strong principles and a determined focus on national reunion and reconciliation. We can disagree with each other but we should not demonize each other. President Obama has tried to spread the lie that I am “anti-Semitic.” Nothing could be further from the truth. It is interesting, isn’t it, that at the same time Obama complains about lies being spread about him he is out spreading lies about me. The president’s behavior is disingenuous and disappointing.

After decrying “silliness” about his birth certificate he ran off to be interviewed by Oprah Winfrey. Oprah is a leader. Obama is not. He is a fundamentally decent human being who stumbled into history in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong set of beliefs and attitudes.

Can we Save the Union? It will not be an easy task. While our foreign competitors are busy building their economies, both Republicans and Democrats are locked in a struggle for political supremacy while the nation declines.

In the Republican Party we lionize President Ronald Reagan. But there is an unbridgeable gap between the Gipper and my opponents. Each one of them is a prisoner of expediency, surrenders to special interests and has never survived any stressful environment.

Lincoln and Reagan came out of the heartland, out of Illinois. And so do I. I have the heartland in my veins. Could the nation be lucky a third time? Could my candidacy be the one to Save the Union? Our fate and our future is in your hands, and in your hearts. I pray my self-confidence is not misplaced. With the deepest humility I ask for your continued support.

As I cross the Mississippi River into Iowa on Saturday I hope I will carry with me your prayers, and your hopes for a greater America. A nation of opportunity for everyone. And a nation that demands personal responsibility from everyone. A nation where we can create economic opportunity for future generations while we preserve the promises we have made to former generations.

If we have the staying power and the willpower, we can succeed. Over the past forty years I have proven I have that staying power and willpower. I may be a dark horse candidate but I alone can grasp the bright future ahead. I need is your support to achieve our goals and dreams for America; a great nation that has been so good to us and so good to the entire world. United, together we can Save the Union.

God bless you,

Andy Martin
