FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Greek-American Presidential Candidate Andy Martin set to file on Monday, October 17th for 2012 New Hampshire presidential primary

Republican reformer Andy Martin will shake up the Republican race with an aggressive campaign

“My opponents have all been part of the problem,” Andy says “How can they be part of the solution?”

Andy may become the last native Greek-speaking presidential candidate to ever file for the presidency

(NEW YORK) (October 17, 2011) Greek-American Presidential Candidate Andy Martin will submit his papers for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination to the New Hampshire Secretary of State on Monday, October 17th. Filing for the 2012 New Hampshire presidential primary begins at 8:00 A.M.

Andy issued a statement to the Greek-American community to announce his filing.

STATEMENT OF ANDY MARTIN, GREEK-AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, ON FILING FOR THE NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARY

Normally “dark horse” presidential candidates don’t cause a lot of commotion. But with the Republican party’s nominating process in disarray there is still plenty of time to make history. The current “flavor of the month candidate” Herman Cain is not the last word on the White House campaign. After Mitt Romney, I may have the best organized presidential campaign in New Hampshire. My supporters have been advertising on TV since February, and on the radio since May.

I am very proud to carry my Greek-American heritage into the presidential primary process.

The Greek-American immigrant experience was very different than that of many other ethnic groups. Other nationalities arrived impoverished, without education, and struggled. Most Greeks did not come in poverty and they were seldom “poor” after they arrived in America. They worked hard and prospered from the day they landed. They built new family lives in America while also helping to support their relatives in Greece.

My family came from a prosperous, educated middle class family in Thessaly. We owned property. We valued education. Our community was very proud of their educational institution (gymnasium) in Tsaritsani. We came to America not out of necessity but out of a desire for opportunity.

My grandfather came first and later brought his wife and children. From our arrival we prized community service and education. My grandmother Evdokia Vasiliou was one of the founding members and instigators of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Manchester, New Hampshire. I am very pleased and proud that this week the church celebrates its 75th Anniversary. What a remarkable legacy my “yaya” helped leave to the people of Manchester.

My wonderful uncle Bill Vasiliou who was such an inspiration in my own life was the first Supreme President of the Sons of Pericles, which was founded in Manchester. I grew up in an AHEPA family. AHEPA politics was a regular topic of family discussion.

Soon after arriving in New Hampshire my uncle became one of the first immigrant Greek-American graduates of the University of New Hampshire. My mother, who was born in Manchester, also graduated from UNH. My mother may be the first Greek-American woman to have received an Ivy League degree (Cornell, M.A. 1940). This is a beautiful legacy of which every Greek-American can be proud.

Today the legendary “Greek Lobby” of the 1960’s and 70’s no longer exists. Greek interests are often ignored. It took ten (10) years and a federal court lawsuit for the Port Authority of New York to arrange for a site to reconstruct the Greek Orthodox church at the World Trade Center. Greek priorities are no longer political priorities.

In October we also celebrate “Ohi” day, when Greece said “Ohi” to the Axis Powers in 1940. Greece was outgunned and outnumbered. But Greeks fought. It is in that spirit of “Ohi” that I will wage my campaign. The other candidates have more money and more political support, but they lack an attachment to traditions and principles of Hellenistic democracy. I am in the “top 10” candidates in the presidential primary. How high I will advance by primary day depends on how well I campaign.

This “Ohi Day” I hope to celebrate with Brother Ahepans at a dinner in Elmhurst, Illinois supporting our wonderful new National Hellenic Museum.

As I ponder the uphill presidential campaign it would be easy to sit down, lie back and do nothing because “I can’t win.” I say “Ohi” to such defeatist attitudes.

And “Greek” is only half of my heritage. I am also an “American.” I was trained at the University of Illinois as a “Fighting Illini.” We don’t give in. We fight hard until the game ends. It is in that joint spirit of intrepid defiance of the odds that I wage my campaign for the presidential nomination.

I have been fighting corruption in Illinois and across the United States for forty-five years. My record of public service is unparalleled by any of the other presidential candidates. The American People want a president who can clean up the mess in Washington, the corruption on Wall Street and the doom on Main Street. How can my opponents solve these crises when they have all been part of the problem? They are all prototypical representatives of a “system” that has failed us. I have he only record of successfully fighting the system; that’s why I am the only candidate who can reform our government.

Because I grew up in a native Greek-speaking household, and was bilingual from birth, I may be the last, the final Greek-speaking presidential candidate to file for the office. It has been 24 years since Mike Dukakis ran. Because of constitutional requirements it is unlikely others will follow me with the same linguistic and family background. I will do my best uphold the traditions that mean so much to all of us.
