New York News Conference THURSDAY Republican presidential candidate demands Ukraine “quarantine”

Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin will hold a New York news conference Thursday, October 13th to demand that the Obama Administration and the European Union impose an immediate “quarantine” on the Ukraine for its persecution of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. “This is not a partisan matter,” Martin says. “Obama cannot allow the dictator Yanukovich to create a new Gulag of political prisoners. As a presidential candidate in the United States, how would I be able to speak up and stand up and campaign freely if Obama could imprison me based on trumped up, politically motivated charges? Republicans and Democrats should support my efforts.”

Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin demands the immediate release of jailed Ukrainian leader Yulia Tymoshenko

Martin says President Obama risks allowing a new “Iron Curtain” if Obama permits Ukrainian thug Viktor Yanukovich to get away with jailing political opponents

Martin is a respected international human rights activist who had advocated for political and press freedom around the world

(NEW YORK) (October 13, 2011) Corruption-fighting Independent Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin will hold a New York City news conference Thursday, October 13th to demand that the United States and European Union immediately “quarantine” the Ukraine until all political prisoners including former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, are freed. Martin has a long history of international human rights activism, most notably in fight to secure the release of imprisoned French journalists who were jailed after the death of Princess Diana.

“In 1979,” Martin states, “a somnolent President Jimmy Carter allowed the Soviet Union to impose its ‘last gasp’ of hegemony in Afghanistan. We are still dealing with the consequences of Carter’s mistake. This week, the Ukrainian dictator and strongman Viktor Yanukovich jailed his former campaign opponent Yulia Tymoshenko on bogus charges that she had impugned Yanukovich and his Soviet-style bully boys by imposing natural gas contracts on her government.

“Prime Minister Tymoshenko respects and represents democracy; Yanukovich does not.

“I stand with the free people of the Ukraine in demanding an immediate release of the former prime minister, and an end to Gulag-style policies in the Ukraine. The only way to obtain these goals is for the Free World—and there is once again a ‘Free World’ and a Yanukovich-inspired ‘Enslaved World’--to immediately quarantine Yanukovich and his thugs and to lock them out of the civilized world, by imposing immediately complete diplomatic and economic isolation. We should shut down all diplomatic missions in Ukraine, withdraw our State Department staff, cut off all economic contacts and send this thug leader a clear and unequivocal message: Free Ukraine!

“Some of the presidential candidates, including Representative Ron Paul, Governor Rick Perry and I, were part of the generation that waged the Cold War. We do not want a return to Yanukovich’s Gulag-style regime that seeks to eliminate opposition by imprisoning his opponents. If Obama fails to act, he encourages dictators everywhere, including Russia where the Soviet-era KGB strongman is preparing for a comeback.

“President Barack Obama does not like me. For the past seven years I have been a thorn in his side. I am the Republican Party’s most effective anti-Obama attack dog, perhaps Obama’s only consistently effective opponent. The idea that I could be jailed for campaigning against Obama, or criticizing him, is unthinkable. What Yanukovich is trying to bring back is a modern version of the Iron Curtain. I will not allow this to happen.

“Democracy is inherently ‘messy,’ confrontational and often acerbic. Public officials routinely make mistakes. Yanukovich is trying to accomplish what Barack Obama refused to do, namely criminalize the policy decisions of his predecessor. Ukraine’s future lies with a bustling, noisy, adversarial democracy, not with the imposition of Yanukovitch’s Stalinist regime.

“It’s 3:00 A.M., and the phone has just rung. Presidential Candidate Andy Martin has answered the call. There is an emergency in the Ukraine. I am asking Obama and Clinton to act, and the EU to act, today. Go.”

Martin is sending a letter to President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton demanding immediate action. He will release his letter at the news conference on Thursday.

Martin returns to Chicago on “home leave” on October 20th, where he will be available to support the Chicago area’s large Ukrainian population and to continue his efforts to free the Ukraine’s imprisoned former prime minister and presidential candidate.
